Saudade: Robyn Cook
19 October – 3 November 2019

Saudade is a Portuguese word that has no direct translation into English. It describes a feeling of profound melancholic or nostalgic longing for something or someone loved and missed. The emotion is made more intense by a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never be seen again.
These works are inspired by the artist’s experiences living and working as a language teacher in Tokyo in 2003: a seminal year that lead to major changes in her life including a move to Melbourne.
The artist explores the reliability of her memory of events as she revisits her experiences through the lens of nostalgia and invites the viewer to consider how memories are shaped and distorted with the effects of time and circumstance.
