Recent Works
David Griffith
15 February–3 March 2024

Recent works draws on the practice of looking and then responding.

Each of the paintings has been taken from quick drawings and sketches done on site.

The premise being that if drawing is the most direct and immediate response to the experience of looking, each drawing should hold enough experiential information and cues with which to examine colour, form, light and space in paint.

The drawing becomes the subject, transfigured into a painted image. Distinctions between drawing and painting become blurred. The drawing serves the painting. And the painting adheres to the marks and experience contained within the drawn image.

David is returning artist. He completed art school in 1999 but spent the following two decades in a different pathway and profession. However, he kept drawing during that time and in 2023 embarked on serious and sustained studio-based practice.

He works in oils, watercolour and acrylics. Drawing is fundamental to his painted mark.

He is interested in slow looking and exploring how we see, perceive and make sense of the world around us.

David was born 1977 and lives and works in Melbourne, Australia
