OUR COUNTRY

BUKU-LARRŊGAY MULKA, ELCHO ISLAND ARTS, NGUKURR ARTS, WARMUN ART CENTRE AND TJARLIRLI & KALTUKATJARA ART
2 JUNE–19 JUNE 2022

Our Country is a collaborative exhibition between Brunswick Street Gallery and five Art Centres: Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre (NT), Elcho Island Arts (NT), Ngukurr Arts (NT), Tjarlirli & Kaltukatjara Art (NT & WA) and Warmun Art Centre (WA), co-curated by Ngukurr artist Karen Rogers.

In this exhibition of painting, sculpture and moving image, each artist tells stories of their land and of the people, animals and life within it.

‘Our Country is our home. It is very important to me as it is where I grew up. My identity comes from the land, my dreaming. It tells us where we belong, and how we interact with our mob. It is part of our knowledge, stories, family. It is our culture. Even if we don’t live on country, it shapes who we are. If we don’t have country we have no home. County is especially important for our children, as it connects them with past generations. It allows us to pass on knowledge from old days to today. It is a bridge connecting us.

Our Country will show stories of the land and people on it. It can be landscapes of country, creation stories, sacred places, and modern-day life for our people. This exhibition is a celebration of our country.’

– Karen Rogers

Co-Curator, Our Country

Marking the first time these five Art Centres have exhibited together, Brunswick Street Gallery has been working closely with emerging indigenous curator and Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA) finalist, Karen Rogers, to present Our Country.

Conceptualised by Rogers, this exhibition celebrates, reflects and provides insights on the often complex and deep relationship each artist has with the land, community and their Country. This partnership between Brunswick Street Gallery and these remote communities has developed over the last few years, as the gallery has worked closely with Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre (NT), Elcho Island Arts (NT), Ngukurr Arts (NT), and Warmun Art Centre (WA). We are now excited to begin a new chapter with Tjarlirli & Kaltukatjara Art (NT & WA) through the creation of this important mile-stone exhibition.

KAREN ROGERS is a multi-year finalist in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA), Indigenous arts worker, printmaker, animator, filmmaker, textile designer and a senior leader within her remote community of Ngukurr, South East Arnhem Land. Our Country, the concept for which was developed by Rogers, will be her first major curatorial project in Victoria, and the first to involve multiple remote Indigenous art centres from across the Top End and Central Desert region. This collaborative exhibition has emerged from the close personal and strong working relationship between Brunswick Street Gallery’s Director, Sean Richard Smith, and co-curator Karen Rogers.
